Job Description

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) invites applications from highly motivated early career scientists trained in the scaling of agricultural innovation to be part of a growing team of experts.

Background

As part of a multicultural, interdisciplinary team, the Postdoctoral Fellow will be responsible for supporting research on scaling and partnership activities for small-scale irrigation (SSI) research in the Innovation Lab for Small-Scale Irrigation (ILSSI) project, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), as well as scaling research activities in other projects within IWMI’s Sustainable and Resilient Food Production Systems (SURF) research group, which could include Africa Research in Sustainable Intensification for the Next Generation (Africa RISING), Societal Development and Ecosystems Conservation in Sahelian Wetlands (SaWEL), Remote Sensing for Water Productivity (WaPoR), Accelerating the Impact of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA), and others.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Conduct field data collection, secondary data collection, literature synthesis, interviews and other forms of activities in relation to innovation scaling, gender equality and social inclusion, and irrigated agricultural value chain research.
  • Analyze data and prepare scientific publications, policy briefs and technical reports in the areas of private and public sector’s investment in SSI and agricultural water management (AWM) interventions.
  • Identify scaling partnerships, policies and institutional requirements for testing approaches, technologies and investment propositions that have strong scaling potential.
  • Facilitate multi-stakeholder dialogues with public and private sector actors, and coordinate the development and dissemination of regular communication (including communication products and outputs) to stakeholders participating in these dialogues.

Requirements

Educational qualifications and experience

  • A PhD degree in Business, Human Geography, Sociology, Development Economics, or a closely related field relevant to Water Resources Management, Agricultural Development and Agricultural Innovation Systems and Scaling, or similar.
  • At least one year of relevant work experience, preferably in areas such as the scaling of agricultural innovations, value chain development and private sector engagement.
  • A record of peer-reviewed publications in academic journals.
  • Experience in effectively using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods and participatory research approaches to design and conduct field research activities across a range of problems, such as:
    • agricultural value chain analysis and market study;
    • innovation scaling partnerships, pathways and processes; and
    • gender equality and social inclusion in irrigated agricultural value chains and innovation scaling.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Ability to conduct research in the areas of irrigation innovation scaling, gender equality and social inclusion, and irrigated agricultural value chains in Africa.
  • Ability to facilitate and maintain strong multi-stakeholder partnerships in agribusiness and irrigation, including the private sector.
  • Ability to apply technical, economic and institutional reasoning to innovation scaling and policy issues in a critical manner.
  • Proven experience in using qualitative data analysis software such as NVivo or/and ATLAS.ti.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively with academic and non-academic stakeholders.

Benefits

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

This is an internationally recruited position with a fixed, two-year contract, with the possibility of extension for one additional year. IWMI offers an annualized base salary of USD 40,600 and comprehensive health, life, accidental death and dismemberment (ADamp;D), long-term disability (LTD) and travel insurance, as well as a transportation allowance. If the successful candidate requires international relocation, s/he may be eligible for additional allowances, which could include shipping assistance, education, and home leave travel support for employee and eligible dependents.

The successful candidate will be based at IWMI’s West Africa Regional Office in Accra, Ghana.
